ICRPS 2019 Summer Institute: Rovaniemi, Finland

The sixteenth International Comparative Rural Policy Studies (ICRPS) Summer Institute will take place in Rovaniemi, Finland, from June 16 to 29, 2019. The institute will convene for fourteen days and will involve approximately 25 graduate students and numerous faculty members from universities around the world. Classroom sessions will be supplemented with field trips, group work and student presentations.

The ICRPS Summer Institute provides a unique opportunity for students to meet and work together on comparative rural policy issues and make invaluable research and networking contacts. The expertise of the faculty involved in ICRPS span across the disciplines of anthropology, business, economics, environmental studies, geography, indigenous studies, planning, policy studies, political science, and sociology.


ICRPS Summer Institutes took place so far in North America and Europe in alternating years. Since 2004, close to 400 graduate students from North America and Europe have benefited from the innovative blend of classroom instruction, rural visits, and research meetings.

The first ICRPS Summer Institute took place at the University of Guelph in 2004. Since then, it has been convened in Leuven, Belgium (2005); Brandon, Manitoba (2006); Solsona (Barcelona), Spain (2007); Missouri, USA (2008); Inverness, Scotland (2009); Oregon, USA (2010); Songdal, Norway (2011); Rimouski, Qu├ębec (2012); Bertinoro, Italy (2013); Toluca, Mexico (2014); Dublin and Galway, Ireland (2015); Fairbanks, Alaska (2016); Barcelona, Spain (2017); and Tuskegee, Alabama, USA (2018). The 2019 Summer Institute will be held in Rovaniemi, Finland, hosted by the University of Lapland.

Each institute connects faculty and international students in a dedicated learning environment. In addition, each institute is a combination of new and returning students, which enhances the mutual learning experience of both years.
